Steigenberger DETAILS

Gene Bates and Fred Couples designed the course with every level of golfer in mind, from the beginner to the advanced golfer playing the tournament circuit. The course boasts three men’s and ladies’ tees each, carefully placed bunkers, lagoons, and desert rough. The aqua driving range accommodates up to 30 players

On the greens, golfers find navigating the course’s pitfalls and varied wind currents challenging to their ability. The Par five fourth hole heads straight into prevailing wind and requires at least two well-placed wood strokes to close in on the green. Because players must aim into the wind, those who draw a fade risk sending their balls into the desert, making it a uniquely challenging hole.

The ninth hole plays towards La Rotisserie Restaurant in the Club House tower. It’s a relatively easy drive for beginners, but presents a serious challenge for those hitting off the championship tees. After surviving the first drive, players are faced with a second shot into the narrowest part of the fairway.

Confident long drivers often attempt to carry the sand trap guarding the front of the green, but even the best may fall short. The green itself is a large target, players often have to make long putts. Only a careful read of the terrain will save you from the dreaded three-putt.
The back nine have their own surprises. The longest Par four is the fourteenth hole, where nearly 440 meters separate the championship tee from the flag. For a reasonable shot at the green, the golfer must be courageous enough to carry a bunker on the left side of the fairway that ends 230 meters from the tee.

The following hole, a dogleg right, presents yet another interesting dilemma. With a lagoon on the right and a large bunker in the center of the fairway, the golfer can try and carry the lagoon, leaving only 130 meters to the green.

Another signature hole is the 17th, a long, narrow and gentle dogleg right running along the lagoon separating the back nine from the Steigenberger Golf Resort. Accuracy on the drive is essential to avoid the sand and water traps to the right, and the fairway bunker on the left. A golfer’s ambitions are rarely enough to carry both the lagoon and the massive bunkers.

Playing it safe to the left leaves a relatively short iron to a large, sloping green. Tricky at first, but a good opportunity for a birdie once you know the lay of the land.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a tee time reservation?

Tee times have to be booked in advance – especially during our very busy winter season. You can book directly by email: golf.club@elgouna.com or through your travel agency or hotel.

Is it necessary to book a trolley/cart in advance?

No, we have enough trolleys and carts for all players on the course at any given time.

Can I play with a handicap between -45 and -54?

In general, a handicap of at least -45 is necessary to play our course. Players with higher handicap may get exceptional approval to play if the occupancy of the course allows it. This permission is at the discretion of golf management and may allow playing only outside main playing hours or only 9 holes during the afternoon.

Is there a shuttle/transportation from my hotel to the Golf Club?

The Steigenberger Golf Resort provides complimentary transportation by golf cart or boat. The Sheraton Miramar and Mövenpick resorts provide free shuttle bus transportation from/to the hotel. Guests at other hotels may use El Gouna’s public shuttles bus (Golf Line), which stops directly in front of the Golf Club House.

Can I leave my bag at the Golf Club?

Yes, we will store your clubs free of charge at our caddy house during your length of stay.

Do we get a discount when staying in one of the El Gouna hotels?

Guests of all El Gouna hotels play under the same conditions and rates on our course.

Overview

Ancient Sands offers a world-class, 18-hole, par 72 Karl Litten championship golf course, adding to the already established Red Sea golfing circuit. The course carefully balances the desert landscape with the lush fairways to create a truly enjoyable course designed to appeal to golfers of all standards. The course follows the natural topography of the land, with the lagoons creating natural water hazards for many of the holes. Currently, 9 holes are already playable, further 9 holes are planned to open in a second stage.

Design

The course carefully balances the desert landscape with the lush fairways to create a truly enjoyable course designed to appeal to golfers of all standards. The course follows the natural topography of the land, with the lagoons creating natural water hazards for many of the holes. .

Playing the course

With four sets of tee locations on each hole, golfers have ample opportunity to improve their game or simply abide by their actual handicap level. The multiple sets of tees impose on individual players of all skills a unique strategy at each hole.

The challenging lagoons, lakes, as well as several sand bunkers and native desert areas will test players’ abilities.

The course is considered more challenging when the back tees are used, and less difficult when the remaining tees are used accordingly. Golfers should expect many target fairways and approach shots over lakes or lagoons by desert green complexes. Poorly played shots can be severely penalized or nicely rewarded, making the Ancient Sands Golf course a true game of sport in an awe-inspiring setting.

GOLF COURSE DRESS GUIDELINES

Socially accepted golf shirts are appreciated, but your comfort is most important. The nicer you look, the better you will play, so goes the rumor. Shorts can be about any style, but please do try to present the shorts at a length everyone wants to look at. Gym shorts are for gym, but if that makes you comfortable to play golf, we welcome you. Footwear is encouraged on course for reasons of safety and should be of a type and style that will not damage the putting greens. No high heels please, boots or the like.
